The Incomplete Script

Reflections on burnout, disillusionment, and questioning the stories we were told

A publication of first-person essays naming what work feels like — without hero framing. These are lived reflections, not advice.

Why Tech Jobs Can Feel Soulless Even at the Top

I reached the level I used to imagine would make the work feel complete. Instead, it felt thinner than before.

The view improved, but the work lost its depth.

This wasn’t dissatisfaction with success — it was the absence of feeling inside it.

The role came with trust, autonomy, and fewer obstacles.

It also came with distance — from the product, from the impact, from myself.

Why Advancement Reduced Emotional Texture

The higher I went, the less I touched.

Decisions replaced execution. Oversight replaced involvement.

I influenced outcomes without feeling embedded in them.

This became clear after creation gave way to preservation .

Distance can grow even as responsibility increases.

When Influence Replaced Participation

I shaped direction without feeling part of the movement.

I weighed tradeoffs, reviewed proposals, approved paths forward.

The work became conceptual rather than tactile.

The satisfaction of building was replaced by the abstraction of guidance.

Influence doesn’t always provide the grounding that participation once did.

How Prestige Flattened the Experience of Work

Everything important was already assumed.

No one questioned my presence. No one doubted my competence.

The absence of friction removed urgency.

Without resistance, the days lost contrast.

Ease can quietly erase engagement.

What Soullessness Actually Feels Like Day to Day

I perform care without feeling invested.

I show up informed, prepared, and articulate.

The internal response never quite arrives.

I noticed this after meaning started thinning out and after salary narrowed my sense of choice .

Fulfillment doesn’t automatically scale with status.

Why This Feeling Is Hard to Admit at This Level

I’m supposed to be satisfied by now.

There’s an unspoken rule that arrival ends questioning.

Doubt sounds like ingratitude.

So the feeling stays internal, unnamed, and unresolved.

Some discomforts survive because they aren’t socially legible.

Why do senior tech roles sometimes feel empty?

Because increased abstraction and distance from creation can reduce emotional connection.

Is this just boredom?

No. It’s a lack of resonance, not stimulation.

Does this mean advancement was a mistake?

Not necessarily. It means the emotional experience changed in ways that aren’t always discussed.

This didn’t mean I was unfulfilled by success — it meant success wasn’t the same as meaning.

I allowed myself to notice the emptiness without rushing to explain it away.
