I used to think the exhaustion would level off once I got used to the rhythm of the job, but instead it kept deepening in a way I couldn’t explain.
It wasn’t the work itself that wore me down — it was how unchanged everything felt.
This didn’t mean I was weak; it meant the work was taking more than it gave.
Every shift followed the same pattern. Clock in. Straighten shelves. Answer questions. Ring people out. Repeat.

I didn’t know it then, but this pattern mirrored what I later recognized in the first time work felt slightly heavier.
Nothing about my responsibilities changed. The expectations stayed low. The tasks stayed simple.
What changed was how much of myself it took to keep showing up as if it didn’t matter.
Being busy all day didn’t mean I felt engaged.
How Sameness Quietly Drained My Attention
The repetition wasn’t just physical. It settled into my thoughts.
I started anticipating the next task before finishing the current one, like my mind was trying to stay ahead of the boredom.
Repetition can drain attention without anyone noticing it happening.

Customers came and went. Conversations blurred together.
I smiled out of habit, not emotion.

What This Kind of Tiredness Actually Was

It followed me home in small ways — shorter replies, less interest, more silence.
Fatigue doesn’t always come from overload; sometimes it comes from monotony.
Retail demands constant readiness. Even when nothing is happening, you’re expected to be available.
That state — alert but unstimulated — is harder to sustain than it sounds.
Each day asked for presence, but offered no sense of progress.
Why did the exhaustion increase even though the job stayed the same?
Because sustained repetition still requires attention and emotional regulation. When nothing evolves, the effort shifts inward instead of outward.
