Reflections on burnout, disillusionment, and questioning the stories we were told

The Subtle Emotional Distance That Appeared

Nothing pulled me away completely, but something inside me stopped stepping all the way in.

The distance wasn’t obvious at first.

I was still engaged enough to function, still responsive enough to keep things moving.

But my reactions arrived a half-step late.

Like I was observing myself participate instead of fully inhabiting the moment.

When presence becomes partial

I didn’t feel disconnected.

Disconnected would have been clearer.

This felt more like a thinning — less emotional contact with what used to register automatically.

I noticed it in conversations, in small decisions, in moments that should have felt familiar.

The response was there, just quieter.

The space that opens without warning

This distance didn’t arrive on its own.

It followed the same arc as the earlier signs — when excitement quietly faded and when recovery stopped fully restoring.

What used to land directly now had to travel farther to reach me.

Nothing was blocked. There was just more space.

Why this feels hard to name

Emotional distance doesn’t come with a story.

There’s no clear cause, no visible trigger.

It looks like calm from the outside.

So instead of questioning it, I assumed I was just adapting.

Becoming steadier. Less reactive.

The quiet cost of standing slightly apart

What distance changes first isn’t performance.

It’s connection — to meaning, to momentum, to yourself.

This pattern appears repeatedly throughout the Early Cracks pillar — the moment emotional presence begins to thin.

The distance didn’t arrive to protect me — it arrived quietly, without explanation.
