How Social Justice Language Started Replacing Real Feedback

Somewhere along the way, feedback stopped being about my work and started being about my alignment.

I remember when feedback felt concrete.

It wasn’t always comfortable, but it was legible. You could point to a decision, a missed detail, a strength that showed up clearly. Even when it stung, I knew what it was referring to.

Over time, that clarity faded.

Feedback didn’t disappear—it changed shape. It became softer, broader, more values-based. Less about what happened, more about how things were perceived.

I didn’t notice the shift right away. I just noticed that I was leaving conversations unsure of what, exactly, I was supposed to do differently.

When Feedback Becomes Symbolic

Conversations about performance started including language that sounded important but felt distant from the actual work.

I’d hear phrases about impact, awareness, intention, responsibility. They carried moral weight, but not much specificity.

Instead of hearing, “This didn’t work,” I’d hear, “Let’s be mindful of how this lands.”

Instead of, “This needs to be clearer,” I’d hear, “We want to make sure we’re holding space for different perspectives.”

None of that was wrong. But none of it told me what to fix.

I found myself nodding along, absorbing the tone without understanding the instruction.

It reminded me of how corporate language smoothed over specifics until nothing solid remained.

The Discomfort of Unnamed Critique

What made it harder was that the feedback still carried consequence.

I could tell something was being signaled. Something wasn’t landing. Something was off.

But because it wasn’t named directly, I had to guess.

Was it my wording? My tone? My timing? My point of view?

I’d replay conversations afterward, scanning for what might have crossed an invisible line.

The lack of clarity didn’t make things safer. It made them more fragile.

When feedback loses specificity, self-doubt fills the gap.

When Values Eclipse the Work Itself

I started noticing how rarely feedback referenced outcomes.

It wasn’t about whether something achieved its goal. It was about whether it aligned with a broader ethical posture.

The work became secondary to how it was framed.

I felt that same displacement when social movements became part of my job description. Meaning started to live above the task itself.

I wasn’t opposed to values. I just didn’t understand why they were replacing clarity instead of informing it.

Without concrete feedback, improvement became abstract.

The Fear of Asking for Clarification

What surprised me was how hesitant I became to ask follow-up questions.

Clarifying feedback felt risky. It could sound defensive. Or dismissive. Or unaware.

I didn’t want to appear resistant to the values being invoked.

So I thanked people for the feedback and moved on, even when I wasn’t sure what it meant.

I’d already learned how silence could be safer than curiosity back when I stopped asking questions in team discussions. This felt like the same lesson, applied more quietly.

How Feedback Started Feeling Moral

Another shift happened slowly.

Feedback started feeling less like guidance and more like judgment.

Not harsh judgment—subtle judgment. The kind that sits in implication rather than accusation.

I felt like my work was being evaluated alongside my awareness, my sensitivity, my alignment with the moment.

It wasn’t enough to do something well. It had to be done correctly, thoughtfully, in the right language.

I recognized the same tightening I felt when inclusivity became about correction. The margin for error narrowed.

The Emotional Effect of Vague Accountability

Over time, I felt less confident, not more.

Without clear markers, I couldn’t tell if I was improving or just avoiding missteps.

I started playing it safe. Choosing language carefully. Avoiding strong positions.

The work became cautious.

I wasn’t being guided forward. I was being guided away from risk.

And that made everything feel smaller.

What I Miss About Real Feedback

I miss hearing what actually didn’t work.

I miss being told plainly where I missed the mark.

I miss feedback that trusts me enough to be direct.

Real feedback assumes capacity. It assumes resilience. It assumes that clarity is kinder than implication.

What replaced it felt careful, but also withholding.

It left me guessing, instead of learning.

After I Adjusted My Expectations

Eventually, I stopped expecting feedback to help me improve.

I started seeing it as a signal of the environment instead.

What mattered wasn’t what I did, but how safely it could be interpreted.

Once I understood that, I stopped searching for instruction in the language.

I listened for tone instead of content.

And I accepted that clarity wasn’t the goal anymore.

What unsettled me wasn’t values in feedback—it was losing the honesty that once made feedback useful.
