A moment when presence started feeling provisional.
I noticed it during a handoff that wasn’t framed as one. Information moved past me, not away from me, as if I were simply the nearest surface to set it down.
No one said I was temporary. No one suggested I was interim.
But the way the work was spoken about made it clear that whoever occupied this space could change without anything else needing to adjust.
Standing in for something undefined
I realized I wasn’t being referenced as a person with continuity, but as a function being fulfilled in the meantime.
The language wasn’t dismissive. It was neutral. Forward-moving. Focused on what needed to happen next.
My presence felt like a convenience, not a constant.
As if the role was waiting for someone—not necessarily different, just interchangeable.
The subtle shift in footing
After that, I noticed how lightly I was standing in the work.
I stopped assuming long-term context would be carried forward. I became more precise, more contained, less expansive.
If I was a placeholder, then stretching beyond the outline of the role didn’t make sense.
The system wasn’t asking for depth. It was asking for coverage.
Not provisional—interchangeable
This wasn’t about waiting to be replaced by someone better.
It was about realizing that replacement didn’t need to be justified at all.
The feeling sat close to what’s described in Invisible at Work—present, functional, and quietly nonessential.
A placeholder isn’t ignored. It’s used until it isn’t.
What that recognition changed
I didn’t step away. I didn’t confront anyone.
I just noticed how much of myself I had been lending to something that wasn’t designed to hold me.
The role had space for a body, not a history.
That distinction clarified everything.
That was the first time I felt like a placeholder instead of a presence.
