When Caring Became a Requirement Instead of a Choice
It used to feel like something I brought with me. Somewhere along the way, it started feeling like something that was already expected.
I didn’t notice the shift all at once. It happened quietly, the way so many things do inside this job.
What once felt personal started to feel procedural. What once felt chosen started to feel assumed.
I kept telling myself I was just tired. But the feeling underneath it didn’t go away.
There’s a difference between giving something and being counted on to give it forever.
Caring feels different when it stops belonging to you.
When care stopped being optional
I used to think of caring as a strength. Something that made the work feel meaningful, even on the hard days.
At some point, it crossed into expectation. Not spoken outright, but woven into everything.
It wasn’t thanked anymore. It was assumed.
Before, I chose how much of myself to bring. During the shift, I learned that no amount was ever quite enough. After, I started noticing how often the job relied on my care to cover what was missing elsewhere.
What begins as generosity can slowly turn into obligation without anyone naming it.
How being “good at caring” became a liability
I noticed that the more I absorbed, the more I was trusted to absorb again.
Calm reactions. Extra patience. Emotional steadiness, no matter what walked through the door.
What changed wasn’t my ability to care — it was how often that care was used to smooth over things that shouldn’t have been smoothed over.
If I could handle it, no one else had to.
Being capable doesn’t mean something costs you less.
The quiet cost of carrying what doesn’t resolve
There’s a kind of fatigue that doesn’t show up as exhaustion right away.
It settles in the body slowly — staying alert, staying open, staying responsive long after the day ends.
It’s not dramatic. It’s a low-level hum that never quite shuts off.
The work doesn’t leave when you do.
Holding emotional weight without relief changes how the work feels over time.
