Why Academic Mentorship Can Feel So Uneven

I noticed it when I stopped knowing what to expect from meetings.

There were check-ins, direction, reassurance that I was on the right track.

I assumed consistency would come with time.

Before, feedback felt timely and contextual.

During the PhD, it began arriving irregularly.

Eventually, I learned not to rely on it fully.

Uneven mentorship created uncertainty more than conflict.

Advisor expectations made inconsistency feel consequential.
